Our Story

Welcome to Colourfully Black

Colourfully Black was born out of love, creativity and the determination to make sure Black children always feel seen.

It all began while I was shopping for party invitations for my daughter’s birthday. Like many parents, I wanted something special, something that reflected her joy, her beauty, and her uniqueness. However, as I searched through shelves and websites, I noticed that none of the invitations truly represented her as a Black child.

The most common children’s themes: princesses, superheroes, animals and cartoons rarely included Black characters. There was nothing that celebrated her skin, her hair, or her brilliance. Instead of excitement, I felt disappointment. It was as though Black children, like my daughter, were invisible in the very spaces meant to celebrate them.

I already understood how important representation is, but in that moment I saw clearly just how underrepresented Black children are in the simple everyday things that are meant to bring them joy. That gap sent a powerful message, so I decided to create what was missing, embarking on a creative journey, one that would eventually become Colourfully Black.

That moment became the spark for a collection of products designed to uplift, affirm, and celebrate Black children.

I started designing invitations that featured Black children in joyful and affirming ways, but I didn’t stop there. I built a collection of products that would uplift, empower and celebrate Black children every single day:
